Cat in the Rain Ernest Miller Hemingway Essay Hemingway was an American author and journalist. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy and understatement, influenced 20th-century fiction, as did his life of adventure and public image. This story is also a psychological one because the author investigates human characters and their relationships. The story is told in the 3rd person narrative. The title of the story admits the fact that the cat’s image makes great play in the story. We can say that it is symbolic title. The characters presented Directly. The text of the story is not homogeneous: it is interrupted with the elements of description and the characters’ dialogues. The plot of the story is meant to begin before the narration itself starts. There isnt any preface to the story, the reader knows nothing about the couple’s past. Author shows his characters in a certain period of their lives. â€Å"Cat in the rain† is about an American couple on vacation in Italy. While at their hotel the woman saw a cat and the story progresses from there. During the story it is made obvious that the couples relationship wasn’t good. Author uses the cat stuck in the rain with nobody to care for it to symbolize the wife wasn’t loved by her husbund. So, the story begins with the description of the hotel where two Americans stopped: â€Å"Palms grew and the bright colors of the hotels facing the gardens and the sea†. We can say that this place is very beautiful. But only one thing breaks the idyll the rain, that’s why the couple stays in and just a cat in the rain attracted the young woman’s attention. She wanted to get the cat inside. At first sight everything seems to be ideal: a cozy room on the second floor, lovely view from the window. And only the description of the rain evokes the mood of sadness in the reader. To bring home this air of melancholy which is felt when it is raining, the author uses such stylistic device as parallel constructions: The rain dripped from the palm trees. The water stood in pools on the gravel paths. The sea broke in a long line in the rain and slipped back down the beach to come up and break again in a long line in the rain . We can notice that nouns rain, pools, sea belong to one sphere the water. This stylistic device is employed by the author to create the atmosphere of inevitability. People can not hide from the rain. Water is everywhere: it is on the ground, it is pouring from the heavens as though the nature weeps for something. Complication starts when the American young lady saw a cat in the rain. The cat sat under the table and tried to make herself so compact that she wouldnt be dripped on†. The girl decided to go down and get this cat. Here we get acquainted with her husband. He is lying on the bed and reading and he has no desire to go out in such weather for the cat his wife wants so much. Although he proposed it but sooner out of politeness and he did not insist. â€Å"Don’t get wet†- he said, but it wasnt a care he said it just to say something. Later we can see that the hotel-keeper gives to her more attention than her own husband. Thats why she liked the owner of the hotel so much. Emphasizing the girls attitude to the hotel-keeper the author resorts to repetition: She liked the deadly serious way he received any complains. She liked his dignity. She liked the way he wanted to serve her. She liked the way he felt about being a hotel-keeper. She liked his old, heavy face and big hands . Unconsciously comparing him with her indifferent husband she liked him because he displayed a kind of attention to her. He always bowed seeing her. His attention can be explained by the fact that he was the owner of the hotel and it was his due to take care of his clients, especially if they were foreigners. He just wanted them to feel comfortable and convenient. He displayed paternal care and attention to her. May be the girl was disposed to the hotel-keeper because he reminded her of her own father who was always kind to her. Anyway, it was so pleasant for the girl to feel sympathy and care. The author says: The pardons made her feel very small and at the same time really important. She had a momentary feeling of being of supreme importance. That is the reason she liked him. He made her feel important. He listened to her every word and request, and she knew that her every little whim will be fulfilled, and that can not be said about her husband who never worried about her feelings. The climax starts when the young lady went upstairs in her room. The only reaction of her husband was the question if she got the cat. He did not notice her disappointment. Suddenly the girl felt unhappy. Through her sad monologue the writer shows all her dissatisfaction with the life, beginning with the absence of the cat and ending with her short clipped hair. I get so tired of itâ€Å"- she says about her hair, but it is not just looking like a boy that she is tired of. She is tired of a boring life, of her indifferent and selfish husband who remains deaf to her despair. She does not say directly that she is not satisfied with her family life. But the reader can see it in the context. She says: I want to pull my hair back tight and smooth and make a big knot at the back that I feel. I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap and purr when I stroke her. She wants to have long hair to look solid and respectable. She wants to have children and her own house which she associates with silver and candles. And the cat in her dreams is a symbol of refuge, something that she corresponds with such notions as home and cosiness. The author underlines the idea of dissatisfaction using repetition. In importunate repetition of the construction I want the reader can see the girls emotional state. This stylistic device discloses her excitement. The emotional tension increases. And I want to eat at a table with my own silver, and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush up my hair out in front of the mirror and I want the kitty and I want some new clothes . Here is an example of polysyndeton. Phonics: How children learn to read Phonics is probably one of the most important parts on how children learn to read. I will discuss the 12 key concepts from the National Reading Panels report on phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. I will also go over how phonemic awareness and phonics instruction can support a balanced reading program. How sounds are used in words is very important to teach students to learn to read. Students need to know that words are made up of phonemes and that they need instruction to help them learn about phonemes. Students will learn to read when phonemic awareness is taught and student needs to know how to manipulate phonemes by using letters of alphabet. I believe that most students can learn to read using phonemic instruction. There are several ways a student can demonstrate phonemic awareness. When a student can segment words into separate sounds such as /c/ /a/ /t/ is one way. Another way is when the student can identify that a set of words begins with the same sound, such as dog, day and down. These words begin with the letter /d/. Thirdly when a student can isolate and say the first or last sound in a word, such as beginning sound of the word fun is /f/ or the ending sound of fat is /t/. Lastly another way to show awareness is if a student can combine sounds in words like /h/ /a/ /t/ to make the word hat. If students demonstrate these skills they will be way ahead in learning to read and spell. Phonemic awareness and phonic sound like they are the same thing, but I will explain the difference between the two. First, phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds in written language. Phonemic awareness is the sounds of spoken language that work together to form words. But phonemic awareness is taught in phonics instruction, so they do work together. Phonemic awareness students will be able identify and manipulate individual sounds in words while in phonological awareness students will be able to recognize parts of spoken language. This usually will include rhyming, and rime, alliteration, intonation and syllables. Some examples of phonemic awareness are when a student can identify a word such as /h/ /a/ /t/. In phonological awareness students will be able to identify the word frog as /fr/ /o/ /g/ or /fr/ or /og/ When a student can start identifying, making oral rhymes such as, rat and cat, the student is showing they have phonological awareness. Another great example when the student can identify and work with onset and rime in syllables, for example hip and it. Also, a student can clap a word so they can hear the syllables in the spoken word. They can use a word they like or their name, such as Kay-lin. Lastly, a student can identify and work with individual phonemes in spoken words like the first sound in hat. To teach phonemic awareness a teacher can use many techniques. The first example is phoneme isolation. This is where the student will be able to recognize individual sounds in a word. A student will understand that the first sound in hat is /h/. Another example a teacher can use is phoneme identify where a student will be able to recognize the same sound in different words. For example the words tall, talk and toad is /t/. Thirdly is phoneme categorization. This is when a student will be able to recognize a word in a set of words that will have a different sound. In a set of words like, fly, fun and sit, will not fit because the word does not start with /f/. The fourth one I will discuss is phoneme blending. Phoneme blending is when a student will be able to listen to a sequence of separately spoken phonemes, combine the phoneme to make a word, write and read the word. Students who will hear a sound like /f/ /a/ /t/ and will know the word is that as well as write the word. Fifth, is phoneme segmentation. This is where a student will be able to break apart a word into separate sounds. For example the student can tap their foot or count the word out such as /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/. The student will understand that the word frog has four sounds. Then the student will be able to write and read the word. Phoneme deletion is the sixth way. This is when a student recognizes a word that remains when a phoneme is removed to form another word. For example a student given the word small and can recognize that mall is the word remaining when the phoneme /s/ is removed. The seventh is phoneme addition. This is when a student can make a totally new word by adding a phoneme to an existing word. For example, the word an and then told to add the letter /c/ to the beginning and the word now is can. The eighth one is phoneme substitution. This is when a student will be able to substitute one phoneme for another to make a new word. A student may be given a word such as hot and asked to ch ange the /t/ to a /p/. Now the student will say the word, hop. After the above techniques are learned the student will have phonemic awareness. A student will improve their reading and spelling with phonemic awareness instruction. Phonemic awareness will also help increase a students vocabulary knowledge. Segmenting words is one way to have the student learn to read and it will also help them to spell. Being able to read accurately is very important for students to be able comprehend what they just read and the students need to stay focused on the meaning of what they are reading. Phonemic awareness is key for a student to be able to understand what they read. It will also help to reduce the stress of sounding out words and having the student taking too many pauses and losing focus of where they are at when reading. A student being able to manipulate phonemes will show that that he or she is becoming phonemically aware. A student will be able to improve how they spell and read if the student is taught that sounds and letters are used in phonemic awareness to reading and writing. It is very important not to teach several of the methods listed above all at once. As a teacher we do not want to confuse our students. It is a great idea to focus on a couple of the techniques until they can master those and then move on to other techniques if needed. Also, we need to be careful to use techniques that will be at the student literacy level. Again, if we teach above the students level, the student can become very irritated, and if taught below their level they may become bored and their behavior may change. I believe that teaching phonemic awareness is very effective when it is taught in small groups. Students thrive in this type of setting because they like to hear what their classmates are doing or what their classmates think of their work especially if it is positive. Of course phonemic instruction will not guarantee a student will be a successful reader but it sure will help with success. Now I will go over seven key concepts that the NRP has on phonics instruction. Phonics instruction teaches relationship between letters and sounds. This helps students learn and use the alphabetic principals so students will comprehend that there are predictable and systematic relationship between written letters and spoken sounds. This also will help student remember how to read words with phonics instruction. The first and probably the most effective concept is systematic and explicit phonics. Phonics instruction teaches students letter sound relationship. This will aid the students in practicing and applying phonics to materials they can use like books that will have several words. This will help the student to decode letter sound relationships with spelling words or in writing. Secondly, the next concept is that kindergarten and first grade students can be successful with word recognition and spelling will improve with systematic and explicit phonics instruction. When a student uses phonics instruction in early childhood there is a greater chance of success that they will be able to read at their current grade level or above. They will also probably be able to write, thus having students to have better comprehension skills. The third concept is to improve student reading comprehension. This can be done with systematic and explicit phonics instruction. If a student can read with fluency and less stopping, the student will be able to understand what they are reading. If student has to keep stopping to sound out words, the student can lose track of what they just read. Again, the earlier the better The fourth concept is that students from various social economic levels need systematic and explicit phonics instruction. This is basically saying that all students can learn to read this way regardless of their socioeconomically background. I do think it may be more difficult for students to keep up if they do not have guidance at home. The fifth concept is that students who are having difficulty learning to read and who are at risk for developing future reading problems need systematic and explicit phonics instruction. The idea behind this concept that students who are at risk can be benefited from this because words will become automatic helping students to read quickly with more accuracy. The sixth concept is that when systematic and explicit phonics instruction is introduced early that it can be very effective. Teachers need to make sure that phonic skills are introduced at grade level or age appropriateness. For example a student in kindergarten may be using letter shapes and letter sounds. Lastly, the seventh concept is that this is not a complete reading program. Students still need learn and have knowledge in alphabet engaging phonemic tasks and having a teacher read to them so they can gain listening skills as well. I know that my third grade son is just now starting to read books on his own and this is giving him confidence in able to read other materials. His teacher also is still reading to the whole class. He is also writing stories on his own. Now I will go over the five parts of a balanced reading program. They are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension. These all will help students to understand phonemic awareness if they learn to segment words into syllables. Students will also be able to blend phonemes and manipulate phonemes to form new words, thus helping them to read and comprehend. Hopefully students will be given opportunities to apply what they learn about phonics in everyday living. Phonics will help the student with word recognition, spelling and reading comprehension. I currently work in a 3rd /4th grade classroom and I notice when a student is struggling to read fluently, they are having a difficult time understanding what they are reading. So students need to have this type of behavior modeled for them and students need to practice reading out loud. This way a teacher can evaluate and set goals. The more fluidly they are when they read, the more they will want to read. Vocabulary is very important as well. It is crucial for students to be able to communicate so they can get their ideas and thoughts across clearly. It will also help if they know what the words mean when they are reading them. Students can learn vocabulary in many areas of their lives. They can listen to their peers, their parents and siblings. Teachers and parents can also make sure the student is reading on a daily basis. Also, a teacher can directly teach vocabulary words. Lastly we will discuss text comprehension. This is one area my son struggles with. He is now being able to read faster and this is helping actually understand what he is reading. His teacher has been giving him strategies to help him read his text through cooperative learning, explicit instruction and silent reading. Becoming an educator, when I use these techniques, I will be able to help my students to be successful in reading and writing. After being in a classroom for the last two years I understand that these techniques are imperative and must be implemented in the classroom. Like I tell my children in sports practice if you want to get better. I will make sure my students will have access to interesting reading materials and I will have them doing many writing tasks. The great thing about phonics is that it can be taught individually or in groups. A teacher should take notice though if a student needs more help than other students. Utah Family Center :: essays research papers

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  We chose to learn about, evaluate and present the Utah Family Center. The goals of this paper are; to explain the logistics of the program, to tie together what we learned with Epstein’s Framework, to describe the climate and those who typically utilize the center, and include some final concluding thoughts about the center. As a group, we referred to the Utah Family Center website, we visited and walked thru the center, and we talked to great lengths with the personnel. We were able to take pamphlets and we took digital pictures of the center to utilize in our group presentation. We worked together to write this report about the Utah Family Center. LOGISTICS   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Utah Family Center is located at 5192 Greenpine Drive (460 West) in Salt Lake City, Utah in the 84123 zip code. The telephone number is (801) 266-6166. The hours and days of operation are 9:00AM until 4:00PM Monday thru Friday. When special classes are offered, they are usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30PM until 8:30PM. When one particular class is offered, it is on Saturdays. Their website is www.utahfamilycenter.org, and their e-mail address is info@utahfamilycenter.org. The Utah Family Center started small but increased in size once they received grant funding six years ago, and with the help of the PTA and the Utah Department of Education. They share office space with the Utah PTA Headquarters. This particular location is the statewide administrative center, and there are different branches of the Utah Family Center that they refer to as satellite centers. There are nine satellite centers, and they are located in Logan, Price, Kaysville, Monument Valley, downtown Salt Lake City, Tooele, Provo, St. George, and Ogden, Utah. The satellite centers range in size depending on the area they are in, as well as the times they are open. The statewide administrative center is equipped with a large boardroom upstairs (seats 40) and a small one downstairs (seats about 12).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The staffing consists of the Director, Barbara Smith, her secretary, a financial advisor, a counselor, other assistants, workshop teachers, and numerous PAT (Parents as Teachers). The Director manages the center. The classes are directed by nationally certified trainers.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Utah Family Center is funded through repeated PIRC (Parent Information & Resource Centers) grants from the United States Department of Education Office of Innovation & Improvement. A PIRC grant is based on helping low performing schools that struggle, with the â€Å"No Child Left Behind† concept a main focus.

Transformational leadership results in higher employee performance, positive relationships and greater employee satisfaction. When employees have job satisfaction is leads to increased productivity and retention. Data Analysis In reviewing and analyzing this article, the transformational leader has four main elements. Inspirational motivation shows a team spirit and enthusiasm for the position. This can affect the staff’s development and potential. The staff is very knowledgeable about the role they play. When problems arise, asking the staff for solution encourages participation and motivation. This also shows the staff they are a valuable part of the team. Intellectual stimulation demonstrates the aptitude for creativity and advancing knowledge base. These leaders encourage their staff to continue their knowledge of the field. They provided mentorship encourage nurses to become certified or get advanced degrees. Individual consideration is where leaders are supportive to their staff’s needs. In this article, Curtis and O’Connell determined that staff will leave a position because the manager did not show concern for the staff. Managers must realize that staff needs social contact and friendship and should be treated with dignity and fairness. Through these leadership skills a manager can create an environment that encourages staff to behave in a mature way, express creativity and enable participation in decision making processes. This will increase job satisfaction, staff retention and productivity. Importance of This Article This article discusses skills for motivating and developing staff. This article also discusses transformational leadership verses transactional leadership. Conclusion In this review, it was discussed the importance of transformational leadership. With transformational leadership the manager can lead the staff (followers) toward job satisfaction. When a staff member has job satisfaction, productivity increased and staff turnover decreases. Job satisfaction is accomplished through charismatic leader, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration. There are gems at every turn, like this wonderful voice from Bill Arp (pen name of Charles Henry Smith, 1826-1903, an American writer from Georgia), featured in The Wit and Humor of America, volume IX: I almost wish every man was a reformed drunkard. No man who hasnt drank liker knows what a luxury cold water is. Cold water may, indeed, be a luxury to the drunkard, but for someone who loves short stories, the real luxury is the chance to explore thousands of rich-but-almost-forgotten texts, to read with fresh eyes, to get a glimpse of literary history, and to form unencumbered opinions about what you read.

Why You Shouldnt Use a Period When Text Messaging Have you ever ended up in a spat with someone after a text message conversation went awry? Has anyone ever accused your messages of being rude or insincere? This may sound a bit crazy, but a study found that using a period to end a texted sentence could be the problem. A team of psychologists at Binghamton University in New York conducted a study among the schools students and found that text message responses to questions that ended with a period were perceived as less sincere than those that did not. The study titled  Texting Insincerely: The Role of the Period in Text Messaging was published in  Computers in Human Behavior  in December 2015, and was led by  Associate Professor of Psychology Celia Klin. Previous studies and your own daily observations show that  most people do not include periods at the end of final sentences in text messages, even when they include them in the sentences that precede them. Klin and her team suggest that this occurs because  the rapid back-and-forth exchange enabled by texting resembles talking, so our use of the medium is closer to how we speak to each other than to how we write with each other. This means that when people communicate by text message they must use other methods to include the social cues that are included by default in spoken conversations, like  tone, physical gestures, facial and eye expressions, and the pauses we take between our words. (In sociology, we use the symbolic interaction perspective to analyze all the ways our daily interactions are loaded with communicated meaning.) There are many ways that we add these social cues to our textual conversations. Most obvious among them are emojis, which have become such a common part of our daily communicative lives that Oxford English Dictionary named the Face with Tears of Joy emoji as its 2015 word of the year. But of course, we also use punctuation like asterisks and exclamation points to add emotional and social cues to our texted conversations. Repeating letters to add emphasis to a word, like sooooooo tired, is also commonly used to the same effect.​ Klin and her team suggest that these elements add pragmatic and social information to the literal meaning of typed words, and so have become useful and important elements of conversation in our digitized, twenty-first-century lives. But a period at the end of a final sentence stands alone. In the context of texting, other linguistic researchers have  suggested that the period reads as finalas shutting down a conversationand that it is more commonly used at the end of a sentence that is meant to convey unhappiness, anger, or frustration. But Klin and her team wondered if this was really the case, and so they conducted a study to test this theory. Klin and her team had 126 students at their university rate the sincerity of a variety of exchanges,  presented as images of text messages on mobile phones. In each exchange, the first message contained a statement and a question, and the response contained an answer to the question. The researchers tested each set of messages with a response that ended with a period, and with one that did not.  One example  read, Dave gave me his extra tickets. Wanna come? followed by a response of Surepunctuated with a period in some instances, and not in others. The study also contained twelve other exchanges using different forms of punctuation, so as to not lead participants on to the intent of the study. Participants rated the exchanges from very insincere (1) to very sincere (7). The results show that people find final sentences that end with a period to be less sincere than those that are ended without punctuation (3.85 on the scale of 1-7, versus 4.06). Klin and her team observed that the period has taken on a particular pragmatic and social meaning in texting because its use is optional in this form of communication. That participants in the study did not rate use of the period as indicating a less sincere handwritten message seems to back this up. Our interpretation of the period as signaling a not entirely sincere message is unique to texting. Of course, these findings do not suggest that people are using periods intentionally to make the meaning of their messages less sincere. But regardless of intent, receivers of such messages are interpreting them that way. Consider that during an in-person conversation, a similar lack of sincerity might be communicated by not looking up from a task or other object of focus while responding to a question. Such behavior signals a lack of interest in or engagement with the person asking the question. In the context of texting, the use of a period has taken on a similar meaning. So if you want to ensure that your messages are received and understood with the level of sincerity you intend, leave the period off the final sentence. You might even consider upping the sincerity ante with an exclamation point. Grammar experts are likely to disagree with this recommendation, but its us social scientists who are more adept at understanding the shifting dynamics of interaction and communication. Infrared absorption spectroscopy is the method which scientists use to determine the structures of molecules with the molecules' characteristic absorption of infrared radiation. Infrared spectrum is molecular vibrational spectrum.When exposed to Infrared radiation, sample molecules selectively absorb radiation of pecific wavelengths which causes the change of dipole moment of sample molecules. Consequently, the vibrational energy levels of sample molecules transfer from ground state to excited state. The frequency of the absorption peak is determined by the vibrational energy gap. The number of absorption peaks is related to the number of vibrational freedom of the molecule. The intensity of ab sorption peaks is related to the change of dipole moment and the possibility of the transition of energy levels.Therefore, by analyzing the infrared spectrum, one can readily obtain abundant structure information of a molecule. Most molecules are infrared active except for several homonuclear diatomic molecules such as 02, N2 and C12 due to the zero dipole change in the vibration and rotation of these molecules Concept: Fourier transform spectroscopy Is a less Intuitive way to obtain the same Information. Rather than shining a monochromatic beam of light at the sample, this technique shines a beam containing many frequencies of light at once, and measures how much of that beam Is absorbed by the sample.Next, the beam Is modified to contain a different combination of frequencies, giving a second data point. This process is repeated many times. Step 2: The second step is getting a background spectrum by collecting an interferogram and its subsequent conversion to frequency data by inverse Fourier transform. We obtain the background spectrum because the solvent in which we place our sample will have traces of dissolved gases as well as solvent molecul es that contribute information that are not our sample. The background spectrum will contain information about the species of gases and solvent molecules, which may then be subtracted away from our sample spectrum in order to gain nformation about Just the sample.Figure 6 shows an example of an FTIR background spectrum. Background IR spectrum The background spectrum also takes into account several other factors related to the instrument performance, which includes information about the source, interferometer, detector, and the contribution of ambient water (note the two irregular groups of lines at about 3600 cm-l and about 1600 cm-l in Figure 6) and carbon dioxide (note the doublet at 2360 cm-l and sharp spike at 667 cm-l in Figure 6) present in the optical bench.Step 3: Next, we collect a single-beam spectrum of he sample, which will contain absorption bands from the sample as well as the background (gaseous or solvent). Step 4: The ratio between the single-beam sample s pectrum and the single beam background spectrum gives the spectrum of the sample (Figure 7). Advantages: Speed: Because all of the frequencies are measured simultaneously, most measurements by FT-IR are made in a matter of seconds rather than several minutes.This is sometimes referred to as the Felgett Advantage. Sensitivity: Sensitivity is dramatically improved with FT-IR for many reasons. The detectors employed are uch more sensitive, the optical throughput is much higher (referred to as the enable the coaddition of several scans in order to reduce the random measurement noise to any desired level (referred to as signal averaging). ? Mechanical Simplicity: The moving mirror in the interferometer is the only continuously moving part in the instrument. Thus, there is very little possibility of mechanical breakdown. Internally Calibrated: These instruments employ a HeNe laser as an internal wavelength calibration standard (referred to as the Connes Advantage). These instruments are s elf-calibratingand never need to be calibrated by the user.
